Join Calderdale’s own renowned, award-winning feminist historian and author Jill Liddington as she takes us inside her latest Anne Lister book As Good As A Marriage, the sequel to Female Fortune(1998), the book which Sally Wainwright herself notes was the inspiration for her writing Gentleman Jack!
The BBC and HBO series Gentleman Jack brought Anne Lister to international attention, including her UNESCO-recognised diaries: all five million words plus of them! –including of course the 1/6thor so that are written in her secret code.
At this fascinating talk, Jill will discuss As Good as a Marriage (2023), which focuses on Jill’s edited transcriptions of Anne Lister’s diaries from 1836-38. These record her life together with Ann Walker’s at Shibden Hall following their ‘marriage’ to each other in York. Join us as we explore Anne and Ann’s daily lives–from convivial evenings together to their tensions and quarrels. Was their relationship really as fragile as Anne’s coded writing suggests? And how does it compare with conventional heterosexual marriages then? Join Jill to find out more about this lesbian marriage, as documented firsthand in the diaries!
Ticket price includes a glass of wine or a soft drink.
